Nine Motivational Reasons to Attend the Maps Conference

On 10th July, we gather again for the Motivational Maps Conference — and this year, of course, there is a special resonance to it. Twenty years of Maps. Twenty years of learning, sharing, measuring, interpreting, coaching, selling, developing, and, above all, being part of a remarkable community. But here is a question worth asking before the day itself: what are you coming for?

It is easy to give the obvious answers. We are coming for the speakers, the workshops, the insights, the networking, the books, the conversations, the lunch, the hotel, the sheer pleasure of meeting people face to face again. All true. But Motivational Maps always invites us to go one level deeper. Beneath the surface of what we say we want, there is usually a more powerful motivational driver: the real reason we turn up, participate, contribute, and go away energised.

So, in the spirit of the nine motivators, here are nine possible “conference packages”. Which one are you coming for?

The Defender is coming for security, clarity, and confidence. Conferences can be exciting, but they can also be unsettling: new information, new people, new possibilities. The Defender wants to know: where are we now? What is stable? What can I rely on? For them, the conference offers reassurance. Twenty years of Motivational Maps means this is not some passing fad, but a proven body of work, grounded in practice and tested in the real world. The Defender leaves with renewed confidence that they are part of something substantial: there is another 20 years coming!

The Friend is coming for belonging. This may be the most obvious conference motivator of all. The Friend wants to reconnect with familiar faces, welcome new ones, and experience again that rare thing: a professional community that is also human. In a digital age, when so much communication is transactional, the Friend values the conversation over coffee, the shared laughter, the “how are you really?” moments. For the Friend, the conference is not merely an event. It is a reunion.

The Star is coming to be seen and recognised. And why not? Many Mappers have worked hard, often quietly and persistently, to bring motivation into organisations, schools, teams, and coaching conversations. The Star wants their contribution acknowledged. They want to hear stories, perhaps tell stories, and feel that their work matters. The conference offers visibility — not in a vain sense, but in the deeper sense of being valued. After all, recognition is one of the great nutrients of performance. Love the photographs we’ll be taking – and posting after on social media!

The Director is coming for influence and direction. The Director wants to know what is next. Where are the opportunities? How can Maps be used more strategically? What is the future of the business, the brand, the methodology, and the market? For the Director, the conference is not just about celebrating the past, important though that is. It is about steering towards the future. They will be alert to ideas they can act upon, systems they can improve, and ways of taking greater control of outcomes. My lowest motivator – but heck, I totally approve of taking greater control of outcomes!

The Builder is coming for commercial possibility. Let us be honest: motivation is not only a noble cause; it is also a business proposition. The Builder wants to know how to create more value, win more work, increase income, and make the Maps proposition more compelling to clients. The Builder listens carefully for practical ways to package, price, position, and sell. For them, the conference is an investment. They expect to leave with ideas that can be converted into revenue. And this is all about becoming more competitive.

The Expert is coming to learn. This is the delegate with notebook open, pen ready, attention sharpened. The Expert wants knowledge, skill, technique, evidence, and refinement. They are not content with vague inspiration. They want to know how things work, why they work, and how to do them better. The conference offers them fresh learning: new insights into motivation, new applications, new models, new ways to deepen their practice. For the Expert, joy comes through mastery. Speaking for my own presentation on learning – and its blocks – I think delegates are going to have a ball with that!

The Creator is coming for ideas. Conferences are wonderful places for cross-pollination. Someone says one thing over lunch, another person adds a comment in a workshop, a speaker uses a phrase — and suddenly the Creator has seen a new product, a new service, a new article, a new way of presenting Maps to the world. The Creator is not simply attending the conference; they are incubating possibilities. They may arrive with one idea and leave with ten. Remember, even the ‘logical’ Map itself has a cledon at the end – the ‘chance’ remark that the Creator really latches onto: the Oracle has spoken.

The Spirit is coming for freedom and renewal. The Spirit does not want to be trapped in routine, bureaucracy, or the same old patterns. They come to the conference to breathe again, to be stimulated, to break out of habitual thinking. They enjoy the variety of the day, the unexpected encounter, the new angle. For the Spirit, a conference is valuable when it opens doors. They want to go home feeling enlarged, not boxed in. I left employment over 30 years ago because … the Spirit led me to. No regrets.

And finally, the Searcher is coming for meaning. Why does this work matter? Why does motivation matter? Why do we continue, after twenty years, to believe in this language, this model, this mission? The Searcher wants purpose. They want to be reminded that behind every Map is a person; behind every score is a story; behind every intervention is the possibility of greater energy, engagement, and fulfilment. The Searcher knows that the deepest work is never just diagnostic. It is transformational. One of the most satisfying thing of all is the feedback: those testimonials that speak ot the power of the Maps.

Of course, most of us are coming for more than one of these things – of course you are: you have 3 motivators probably in your top profile. We may want to learn, reconnect, be inspired, develop business, and celebrate the journey all at once. That is the beauty of motivation: it is rarely one-dimensional. But perhaps the useful question is this: what would make the conference a success for you?

Would it be one new client idea? One renewed friendship? One fresh insight? One moment of recognition? One clearer sense of direction? One reminder that the work we do really matters?

Whatever your motivational package, the invitation is the same: come ready. Ready to listen. Ready to contribute. Ready to celebrate. Ready to learn. Ready to enjoy the day. Twenty years is a milestone. But a milestone is not a stopping place. It is a marker on the road.

And on 10th July, we gather not only to look back with gratitude, but to look forward with energy.
