The Power of High Energy

Shaping the Quality of our Lives: Motivation and The Power of High Energy

We all know what it feels like to be motivated. It’s that spark in the morning when you wake up ready to go, that lightness in the step when the day seems brighter, more manageable—even exciting. Motivation, in essence, is energy. And when our energy is high, we don’t just feel better, we actually live better. Because, beyond the “feel-good factor,” energy is the force that shapes our success, our resilience, and ultimately, the quality of our lives. The real question, then, is not whether energy matters, but why we don’t treat it with the same seriousness we give to fitness, diet, or career growth.

Energy as Resilience

Life, as we know, rarely runs in straight lines. It throws us curveballs—at work, in relationships, in our health or finances. Some people collapse under the weight of these challenges, while others seem to find a way through. What makes the difference? Very often, it’s energy. High motivation fuels resilience. It’s the inner battery that helps us recover when we’re knocked down, the stamina that carries us forward when others stall. With energy on our side, setbacks are not endpoints but stepping-stones.

Energy as Productivity

Think back to your best days—the days when everything seemed to click, when ideas flowed and work felt almost effortless. Were you tired and drained on those days? Of course not. You were energized. High energy sharpens focus, fuels creativity, and lightens the heaviest of tasks. It is the invisible driver behind productivity and performance. Teams that hum with motivation consistently outperform those that don’t, and individuals who nurture their energy achieve more, often with less stress.

Energy as Relationship-Building

But energy doesn’t just affect what we do. It also changes how we show up. When we are energized, we are kinder, more patient, more open. We engage more deeply, listen more fully, and contribute more generously. High energy strengthens our relationships because it makes us better company, better colleagues, better partners. After all, who wants to spend time with someone perpetually drained?

The Wider Benefits

And it doesn’t end there. Energy is the hidden hand behind good health, driving us toward better food, more exercise, more life-affirming habits. It raises self-esteem because when we’re engaged and alive, we naturally like ourselves more. And it nurtures optimism, acting as a buffer against stress, making problems feel lighter, smaller, more solvable.

The Three Pillars

If I were to distil it all, I could say that the three greatest gifts of high energy are these:

  • Resilience – the strength to bounce back.
  • Productivity – the power to achieve more with joy and focus.
  • Relationships – the ability to connect at our best.

Together, they shape the life we lead.

So, What Can We Do?

Motivation is not some fleeting spark to be waited on, like lightning striking out of nowhere. It is a fuel that can be cultivated and replenished. Without it, even the most gifted people falter. With it, even the seemingly disadvantaged can triumph. High energy is not a luxury—it is a necessity. Which leads us to the real question: what are you doing to protect and grow your energy?

Daily Practices to Re-Energize (Using the 9 Motivators)

One of the keys to understanding motivation is recognising that it doesn’t look the same for everyone. We are not all driven by the same needs. This is where the Motivational Maps framework is so powerful: it identifies nine motivators that energize people in different ways. And for each one, there is a simple daily practice that can top up your motivational tank.

  • Defender (Security): Each morning, jot down three things in your life that are stable and dependable. Acknowledging them strengthens your sense of safety.
  • Friend (Belonging): Reach out to one person today—a colleague, a friend, a family member. Connection fuels belonging.
  • Star (Recognition): Celebrate even the smallest win. Share it with someone who will appreciate it. Recognition doesn’t need to wait.
  • Director (Control): Before the day begins, set your three top priorities. Owning your day restores a sense of control.
  • Builder (Material Gain): Set a tiny, measurable financial goal—save £5, update your accounts, or track one habit. Every step forward builds momentum.
  • Expert (Learning): Dedicate ten minutes to reading, listening, or exploring a new idea. Growth happens in small, daily doses.
  • Creator (Innovation): Do one creative thing—sketch, brainstorm, or reimagine a routine. Creativity sparks fresh energy.
  • Spirit (Independence): Carve out one moment of choice, however small. Choosing freely strengthens your independence.
  • Searcher (Purpose): At day’s end, reflect on how your work or actions contributed to something meaningful. Purpose is the deepest fuel of all.

The truth is simple: when your energy is high, almost anything feels possible. The more we understand what drives us—and the more we nurture those motivators—the more we live lives that are not only successful, but also joyful and deeply fulfilling.
